Caulk Finishing Tool
Caulking is the process of making objects water-tight by sealing them with water-proof fillers called caulks. These caulks are applied along the various joints of water pipes, sewage outlets, tiled bathroom floors, kitchen floors etc using a caulk finishing tool. Caulking is also used in wooden boats, ships etc to make them waterproof.
Traditionally, in olden days, caulking was done on boats and ships using cotton fibers, hemp fibers etc. In the seam that joins the planks of the boat, the fibrous material was stacked using caulk finishing tool like caulk mallet and iron. In recent times, silicones, polyurethane, polysulfides are generally used as caulking material. These caulk are filled inside a caulk finishing tool such as a caulk gun and used for water proofing. Other tools like pointed wooden spoons, metal objects, petrified tar, shaped wood and even wet fingers are used as a caulk finishing tool.
Caulk gun is the most common caulk finishing tool used by builders in shipping, plumbing, building constructions etc. A caulk gun is a tool shaped like a gun with a cylindrical tube in the middle that holds the caulking material. A cap with appropriately sized nozzle is attached at the end of the cylindrical tube. There is a trigger attached to the bottom of the tube so that it can be pressed to release the caulk through the nozzle. In places where thin lines of caulk are needed from the caulk finishing tool, a bead is placed in the nozzle to further reduce the outflow of the caulk through it. The width of the nozzle in the caulk finishing tool should be of the same size of the bead. If the nozzle is narrow, the bead might not fit properly and if the nozzle is wide, then the bead spits surplus caulk.
Below are the various places in a building where a caulk finishing tool can be used for the purpose of caulking
A suitable caulk finishing tool is run along the windows spreading standard amounts of caulk to seal the window fittings on the walls. This makes windows stay firmly attached to the walls and provides a great finishing on the wall.
- Tiled Floors and walls:
Tiling is nowadays used on the floors and walls in places like kitchen and bathroom where there is considerable amount of contact with water inside the house. The tiles are placed along the walls or the floors and allowed to dry. Then the caulk finishing tool filled with the caulk like silicone is run along the edges of the tiles so that a uniform coating of caulk is filled along the seam where two tiles join. Before the caulk dries, the caulk is smoothened out by using a soft napkin or cotton coated with oil. Once the caulk dries, it solidifies into rubber-like material and provides the much needed water proofing to the walls and floors.
If an effective caulk finishing tool is used, the person who performs the process of caulking will greatly enjoy the work. Using caulk gun as tools and silicones as caulking material provides that quality finish to your windows, tile floors, bathroom and kitchen floors, pipes etc. Silicones are resilient materials that seal any tiny gaps along the seam between joints. They also prevent leakages in pipes. Thus, using quality tools, you can save a lot of future expenditure on repairs. When the right caulking material is used with the right caulk finishing tool, the building acquires a clean, crisp and a fantastic finish.
